PORT ELIZABETH SHAKESPEAREAN FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES ‘AS YOU LIKE IT’ TO BE STAGED FROM 6 TO 16 MARCH 2019 IN MANNVILLE OPEN AIR THEATRE, ST GEORGE’S PARK.
The Port Elizabeth Shakespearean Festival is pleased to
announce ‘As You Like It’. This much-loved romantic comedy which rates as one
of Shakespeare’s most popular plays features a cast of dynamic young performers
under direction of Woodlands Dairy Showtime winning actor and theatre maker,
Jacques Batista. Approached by PESF in January to direct this year’s instalment
of the longstanding open air event, Batista chose ‘As You Like It’ for its
social content that relates to events happening in our world today.
Leading the cast as Rosalind is Tarryn Light opposite romantic interest Orlando, played by Glen McIlroy. Cast in the sought-after role of Jaques is Jaydee Mulder whose portrayal of the character refreshes “All the world’s a stage” through physicality and language for a contemporary audience. In support, are versatile performers such as Liske Hemingway who plays Rosalind’s cousin, Celia, Oliver’s love interest played by newcomer Luke Erasmus. In addition, Matthew Hamilton plays the wildly exciting Touchstone opposite Kathleen Fouche as Audrey. Joining the cast with a family history of performing Shakespeare for PESF is Kerry-Lee Allen as both Duchesses – Frederica and Senior in addition to contributing the choreography of the opening dance that locates the play firmly within its social context.
The concept of the play centres on the social dimension of
the play related to modern events happening in our world at the moment:
building (or tearing down) devisive walls, worker uprising, the possible
fallout of BREXIT, the environment and gender fluidity. The subtle references
to these issues do not hinder a more traditional presentation of the text but
only enhance Shakespeare’s comment on society. The central conflict in ‘As You
Like It’ is a result of political usurpation which drives a more socialist
community into the forest of Arden – Shakespeare’s construct – where they live
like “Robin Hood’s merry people of a golden age”. The forest resembles our
contemporary quest for a utopian world of equality, free of capitalist
interference.
The set and lights, designed by Rocky Mann, become a moody expression of the play’s emotional and political landscapes shifting from fascism to liberation and from fear to love in the romantic escapades of the lovers whose comic exchanges lighten the darker undertones of a plot that plays the fool with its characters. Using an eclectic mix of costumes by Brigitte Mann, ‘As You Like It’ is presented in a more traditional format with Post-modern elements serving the concept. Director, Jacques Batista, fresh off attending workshops in London and Brussels, recently was awarded the Woodlands Dairy Showtime award for Theatre Creativity in a high school production and again employs a more innovative approach to staging Shakespeare that is accessible to a wide audience. Peter Mann with members from his studio have choreographed the closing dance sequence and curtain call.
‘As You Like It’ runs from 6 to 16 March 2019 at 19:30pm nightly (excluding Sundays) at R65 for adults and R40 for scholars and block bookings in Mannville Open Air Theatre, St George’s Park. For Block bookings, please call Helen on: 041 5811738.
